Grospierres

The name of the village comes from the Latin words ‘gurges petra’ (chasm in the rock). It was probably so-called because a river springs up from the earth (the ‘Font-vive’) below the old village and castle of ‘Le Chastelas’.
Places to see:
The spring of Font-vive: This is an amazing place: right in the middle of the guarrigue (i.e. the Mediterranean scrubland), you will get to a magic place where a clear and deep spring is surrounded by a green oasis. This spring is of the same type as the Fontaine de Vaucluse’s.
The Roman Chapel Notre-Dame-des-Songes
The castle of ‘Le Chastelas’ (14th century): The old and abandoned village ‘le Chastelas’ was the cradle of Grospierres. It was built on a promontory and provided a panoramic viewpoint above the Chassezac valley. It was composed of a fortress and a pioneer church. The church was abandoned and destroyed in 1591 during the French Wars of Religion. From the 19th century, the inhabitants of ‘le Chastelas’ decided to move to the Chassezac valley and benefited in this way from advantages such as water and railway. Today, the association ‘Renaissance du Chastelas’ refurbishes a part of the old village.
