Ruoms

The medieval village was founded in the 10th century.
The name ‘Ruoms’ appeared in 1464 and presumably comes from the Celtic word ‘Ritomagus’ (the field of the ford) because the village had been founded near a fordable part of the river Ardèche. The official documents on Ruoms date from the foundation of the priory in the 10th century. However, the excavations in the caves of Peyroche and Beaume-Granas and the substantial number of dolmens reveal that the region has been populated since very old times.
The ramparts and their seven round towers, the roman church and the chapel ‘Notre Dame des Pommiers’ were built between the tenth and the twelfth centuries.
The quarries of Ruoms kept on being exploited until fifty years ago. The limestone rock was used to build many monuments and art works.
Ruoms was also a small industrial city. In 1967, the breweries were closed and replaced by wine production. Today, Ruoms has the biggest wine cooperative in Ardèche: ‘les Vignerons ardèchois’.
