Saint-Alban-Auriolles

The village is situated at the confluence of three rivers: the Ardèche, the Chassezac and the Beaume. It is surrounded by two very different landscapes: an arid guarrigue on the one hand and a farmland on the other hand.
Places to see:
The dolmen of the Calvary
Thanks to the presence of about thirty dolmens, we know that the village has been populated since very old times. It was probably due to its preferential location. Dolmens are prehistoric collective sepulchres. They were built and used over a long period of time: it is estimated that they were erected between 4.000 and 5.000 years ago. The authentic necropolis can be partly seen from the walking path.
To see the dolmens: from the ‘place de la Mairie’, follow the waymarked footpath on the Way of the cross till getting to the Chapel St Pierre-ès-liens, which is a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Chassezac valley and the Rock of Sampzon. From there, follow the waymarks on the path behind the Chapel. You will get to an amazing and well-preserved dolmen classified as Monument historique. A walking guide of the village has been conceived by the association ‘Chemin faisant’ and is available at the grocery shop or the Tourist Office.
